Seamless Gutters in Cincinnati: What the Price Per Foot Buys

Three quotes for seamless gutters on the same Blue Ash colonial: $1,900, $2,400 and $2,850. Same house, same footage, all “seamless aluminum.” The homeowner assumed the difference was margin. Most of it was metal thickness and screws. Here is what each dollar per foot is buying, so you can read the quotes instead of just sorting them.

The range and where it comes from

Seamless aluminum gutters Cincinnati crews install run about $9 to $14 per linear foot in 2026, including tear-off, downspouts and haul-away. On a 200-foot two-story house that’s a $1,000 spread. Five things account for nearly all of it.

1. Gauge: .027 versus .032

Aluminum gutter coil comes in two common thicknesses. Most volume crews run .027 because it’s cheaper and lighter on the machine. We run .032, which is about 20% thicker. It matters here for one reason: ice. A gutter full of frozen oak leaves weighs several pounds per foot, and .027 metal flattens between hangers under that load, then holds water at the flat spots, then freezes heavier. On a house in Florida the difference is academic. In Cincinnati it’s the difference between a gutter that’s straight in year 15 and one that isn’t. The upcharge is roughly $0.75–$1.25 per foot.

2. Hangers: spikes versus hidden screws, and how many

The spike-and-ferrule hanger — a 7-inch nail through a tube — was the standard through the 1990s and is still what the cheapest quotes use, because the spikes cost pennies and go in with a hammer. Every freeze-thaw cycle works them out a little. Hidden hangers are brackets inside the gutter with a screw into the rafter tail; they don’t back out, and they don’t show. We space them every 24 inches, and every 18 inches on north-facing runs and under any roof that sheds snow. A cheap quote is often spikes at 36 inches. Ask for the hanger type and spacing in writing; it adds about $1 per foot and it’s the single most important line.

3. Downspouts: size and count

A 2x3 downspout is the default. A 3x4 costs about $2 more per foot of downspout and carries roughly twice the water. On a two-story roof plane in a July thunderstorm that’s the difference between draining and overflowing. Count matters too: one downspout per run is the builder standard, and any run over 35 feet needs two. A quote with six downspouts on a house that needs eight is $400 cheaper and will overflow at the far corners for the next 25 years. 5-inch vs. 6-inch covers the sizing arithmetic.

4. Corners

Every inside and outside corner is a miter — two runs cut at 45 degrees and joined. There are strip miters (a folded strip over the joint, cheap, leaks first), box miters (a preformed corner piece, better), and hand-cut miters sealed with polyurethane (best, slowest). A hip roof with ten corners has ten future leaks or ten sound joints depending on which the crew used. It’s a few dollars per corner; it’s where most of the leaks we reseal come from.

5. Fascia

The board behind the gutter. On a 1980s house in Anderson Township or a 1990s house in West Chester it’s usually sound except under one or two corners. A quote that says “fascia repair as needed, $12/ft” is honest. A quote that doesn’t mention it either didn’t look or plans to hang the new gutter on soft wood and be gone before it lets go.

Reading the three quotes

The $1,900 quote is a like-for-like replacement of the gutters coming off the house. The $2,850 quote is a different product. The $2,400 one is the interesting one — decent hangers, right downspouts, thin metal — and it’s a reasonable buy for a single-story ranch with a simple roof. It isn’t for a two-story with valleys and pin oaks.

What isn’t worth paying for

A brand name on the coil. Aluminum coil comes from a handful of mills and the paint finish is the same 20-year baked enamel across most of them. “Lifetime” anything on the sealant. And a rushed decision: the price of aluminum doesn’t change between Tuesday and Thursday, so a quote that expires when the salesman leaves is a sales tactic, not a price.

Getting a quote you can compare

Ask every contractor for the same five things in writing: gauge, hanger type and spacing, downspout size and count, corner type, and fascia per foot. Add haul-away and extensions. Then compare.
