What Cincinnati does to a gutter
Cincinnati gets a little over 40 inches of rain a year, and the hard part isn’t the rain. It’s the winter. From December through March the temperature crosses freezing dozens of times, so meltwater runs into the gutter in the afternoon, freezes solid overnight, expands, and pries at every seam and hanger. By spring the gutter that was fine in November has a corner pulled open and a run sagging in the middle. The second problem is the trees. Pin oak, red oak, sugar maple and silver maple line most streets from Hyde Park to Westwood. The maples let go in late October; the oaks hang on into December and some drop through the winter. A gutter that was cleaned in early November is often full again by Christmas, and a full gutter is what freezes into a block.
The third is the housing. Hyde Park, Clifton, Northside, Walnut Hills and Pleasant Ridge are full of pre-1940 homes with built-in box gutters, the trough carved into the roof edge and lined with metal. When the liner fails, water goes into the cornice and the wall, not onto the lawn. That is a different trade from hanging aluminum, and most gutter crews won’t touch it.
And then there are the hills. Half the lots in the city sit on a slope, and a downspout that dumps at the top of one keeps the clay wet, undermines the retaining wall, and on the steepest streets feeds the slides the city has been fighting for a century. Where the water ends up matters as much as whether the gutter leaks.

Licensing, plainly
Ohio does not issue a state license for gutter contractors, so the words “licensed gutter company” on a truck door mean nothing on their own. What exists is city and county contractor registration, which the City of Cincinnati requires before a contractor can pull a building permit. Most gutter replacement doesn’t need a permit; box gutter rebuilds that touch roof framing sometimes do. We carry the registration and general liability and workers’ compensation insurance, and we’ll send the certificate before the crew arrives. Ask every contractor for the same.

How much does gutter repair cost in Cincinnati?
Most repairs run $150 to $600. Resealing a corner or end cap is the low end; re-hanging a long run that ice pulled off, or replacing a split downspout, is toward the top. If more than a third of the system needs work, replacement is usually the better spend, and we’ll say so on the estimate.
What do seamless gutters cost in Cincinnati?
Seamless aluminum runs about $9 to $14 per linear foot installed around Cincinnati. A single-story home with 160 feet of gutter and four downspouts is typically $1,500–$2,300. Two-story homes, 6-inch gutters and fascia repair add to that. Copper is a separate quote.
Do you work on box gutters?
Yes. Built-in box gutters on pre-1940 homes in Hyde Park, Clifton, Northside and Walnut Hills are a specialty. We reline with EPDM membrane or new metal, rebuild rotted trough wood, and sort out the internal downspouts. Relining is usually $35–$75 per foot; a rebuild is more. See the box gutter page.
My gutters were pulled loose by ice. Is that a repair or a replacement?
Usually a repair. Ice pries the hangers out and opens the corners, but the aluminum itself is often fine. We re-hang with hidden screw hangers, reset the pitch, and reseal. If the gutter is kinked, that section gets replaced and matched. The exception is old steel that’s rusted through — that’s a replacement.
Do I need a permit to replace gutters in Cincinnati?
For ordinary gutter replacement on a house, no. Box gutter work that involves rebuilding roof framing, or exterior changes on a home in a designated local historic district, can need one, and Cincinnati requires a registered contractor to pull it. We carry the registration and we’ll tell you before quoting if your job needs a permit.
Are you licensed and insured?
Ohio has no state license for gutter work, so nobody in Cincinnati can honestly claim a state gutter license. What you should ask for is proof of general liability and workers’ compensation insurance, and city contractor registration if a permit is involved.
